Video: Voetballende lesbiennes in Zuid-Afrika » Girlfriends
Mbekweni, Paarl, South Africa. 17 November 2009. Nomakwezi Molo and Phozisa Melani. It is a common believe that it is unnatural for Africans to be gay. In 2007 Banyana-Banyana (SA national womens’ team) midfielder, Eudy Simelane was gang raped and stabbed to death. The discrimination in their community caused a group of young lesbians in Mbekweni township to come togther and form their own soccer team, a place where they feel safe. This photograph is part of a portrait series of the LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual & transexual) Paarl soccer team taken in the dressing rooms of Mbekweni community stadium. Photo: Simone Scholtz
